I just read today the latest posts in RMN and I will send some pics of the remains of Windsor building. Here in Spain the notice hasn´t attracted all the deserved attention because some previous notices of catastrophic events were considered more important ( both of them were related to buildings security ). One of them was related with an earthquake in the mediterranean coast, in Murcia region. This earthquake left many old buildings in some villages in the eve of demolition ( apart from the houses destroyed ). The other notice happened in my city, Barcelona, and was really a miracle that no one was injured or even dead. The work of underground train ampliation in one of the districts of Barcelona ( El Carmel) caused the sudden collapse of one building ( literally engulfed in a matter of seconds by a huge hole in the gronud ) and after that other building collapsed hours after. All of this resulted in the evacuation of more than 1200 people and the demolition of some buildings.This incident, caused by a long chain of incompetence that never had happened before in our city has enraged many citizens against city council and the autonomous government of the Generalitat.
Today, four firefighters and architects entered in the Windsor tower. They had seen a part of the building ( the last floors were inaccessible; the amount of debris and fused metal blocked the way ). When the fire happened many talked about 11-S similarities and differences. The TV news in many channels explained that the Windsor didn´t collapsed due to "their reinforced concrete core", while Twin Towers "had a steel core" that melted under high temperatures...
The Windsor Tower was the 23th tallest building in Spain. Fire started at 23:00 hrs. It was 23:10 when the security employees detected the fire. They tried to unsuccesfully extinguish the fire until 23:21, when an unknown "maintenance employee" made a phone call to firefighters. The fire started at floor 21.
This fire has collapsed the financial heart of Madrid. More than 10,000 workers of many firms and enterprises could not go to their offices because the security perimeter. This fire affected the subway train too, and more than 600,000 workers had trouble going to their workplace
