That is exactly what she would want! Hydration is key, and thank you so much for posting this information. Her wisdom never left my mind, but now I have a way to do this myself, as I don't have venous catheters and sterile IV drip solutions in my cupboard. However that being said, it IS hard to get enough fluid into the patient while sick using the oral route. The key is little bits OFTEN. It is hard, but don't give up. I am not a human nurse, but I have taken home countless numbers of tiny (and large) animal patients, such as when people are unable to afford to pay, rather than euthanize I would always volunteer and make do with whatever it took. Heartbreaking at times, but lessons learned well. Be patient, and don't choke the patient trying to get enough in. If you can get your hands on a large syringe that is very helpful for getting the fluid into the mouth, without giving too much at a time.
Also if you write down how much is given every time, and know how much the patient needs daily, it saves you worrying whether or not you have gotten enough hydration into the patient. Sometimes when you are in the midst of working so hard to help, you cannot remember little details like "how much?"
(At least I couldn't)
And it is so wonderful at times to see just how good hydration DOES help! I have seen miracle after miracle, with just good hydration.....
