This mob, the ECAJ, come out every year with this little survey of theirs. You probably won't hear too much about it because a couple of years ago it was brought to their attention that in Australia Jews are one of the least likely groups to be targets of racism in Oz.
Out of all ethnic groups the Jews are way down the list. First on the list I know of is Australian Aboriginals, other dark skinned groups(islanders mainly) are next, then Asians, then people of southern European descent!
The only thing is that,the Australian government are the ones who compile the figures for all ethnic groups in Oz re: harassment: but the ECAJ compile their own for Jews and pubish them in press releases. They got caught out by 'Media Watch' on the ABC for slanting/exaggerating the discrimination suffered as a group. When they were asked for a break down of actual incidents, what came out were some rather trivial verbal assaults amongst the more serious offences! It made them look a little precious. The problem found was what actually does 'denote' serious as opposed to trivial harassment?

Dear T.P... I also have not heard a dicky-bird about these attacks on the jewish community discussed in Mailbag's message yesterday. I have my 2 radios both tuned permanently to ABC radio... and.. when 6pm comes... I watch channel 9 news on TV.. then I switch over to channel 2 news at 7pm.. and the TV stays on channel 2 for the rest of the evening, including the late night news..and other broadcasts of news items.. NO news at all on this subject... I am SURE if mailbag's assertions ..or his informant were correct.. I would have heard it. I doubt the veracity of this message.. particulrly as Melbourne is such a jewish-centred city. I am sure this information would have been broadcast. Thanks..A.
