(I seldom post articles anymore on govt., politics, etc., (seldom, not never) but RMNs reader Steve asked me to post this and it is a viable and realistic perspective.
"The President and the Morning of 9/11"
Everyone keeps asking "Why did President just sit there, and continue to read to the kids, after being told of the events unfolding on 9/11"? And why did he not "Rush" out of the room? They keep asserting the President had sinister motives, that he knew of the events unfolding, and that is the reason he did not leave right away.
One person even contends that the Secret Service would have “immediately rushed him out of the Elementary School”. It’s amazing to hear people who have no idea of what they are talking about, make such statements!
Since I have connections with people (family) who do this type of "Security" work, I asked them why the President was not immediately whisked away.
To start with, they told me the person who made the statement that the Secret Service would have “immediately rushed him out of the Elementary School” obviously has not one clue of what they are talking about. The school itself was not under attack, and in fact, at that moment (with all the Secret Service and Local Police present) was the safest place for the President to be; so why rush him from a KNOWN safe place, out into the unknown?
Now, as to why the President stayed in place and kept reading to the children:
For starters, the President was told to stay there, and wait for the word when he could be moved in a safe and secure manner. You see, the Secret Service and Local Police had to not only assure the President's safe passage out of the building, but the route back to the airport as well, where he could then board Air Force One. They knew that Bush was relatively safe right there at the school for the moment, so why whisk him away hurriedly, in a panic, without knowing what could be waiting just down the road? Before moving him, you would first want to secure his safe passage not only out of the building, but as much of how and where he was being moved to, as well! The Secret Service had no idea at the time exactly what was going on (ie: terrorist attacks, multiple assassination attempts), and so before they could move the President, they needed to assure that they could move him SAFELY; quickly, but SAFELY!
And that is why President Bush, after being told of the events unfolding on the morning of 9/11, sat there and continued to read to the children - He was doing exactly what he was told to do!!
What should he have done? Jumped up in a panic, and run out of the room? Or sit quietly; continuing to read to the children, until he got the word that they had secured the area, that he could now be moved Safely, and it was time to leave?
The President did exactly what he was supposed to do!!
