Essentially I agree with your reader on this one. Many English bibles appear to have deliberate mistranslations, while others are best described as containing human error. However, mistranslated scripture does not hold a monopoly on fear; the media does. In other words, greater levels of fear are induced by listening to terror rhetoric or reading a newspaper.
Still, the advise to consult yet another man-made contrivance such as the Phoenix Chronicles, can be offset by reading scriptures directly from the Greek and Hebrew. An interlinear is a word-for-word rendering of the original, and most of them convey the original writer's thoughts.
