WASHINGTON, May 25 (UPI) -- When the dust has settled after all the political upheaval in Iraq, will a tall and elegant British-trained economist be its king? Or would Sharif Ali bin al-Hussein, 47, pretender to the country's throne, at least wind up as its republican leader, similar to Simeon Saxcoburggotsky, formerly King Simeon II of Bulgaria and now that nation's prime minister?
To hear Sheik Mohammed Mohammed Ali, a Shiite scholar, there isn't much chance for that. Sharif Ali's Constitutional Monarchy Movement is but one of 150 political parties in Iraq, according to the sheik. "There's no support for a return to monarchy," he said.
But then nobody knows if there is any real opposition to it, either. For one thing, Sharif Ali, a direct descendant of the prophet Mohammed, 42 generations removed, is not surrounded by scandal; that distinguishes him from others in the leadership of the formerly London-based Iraqi National Congress whose spokesman he used to be.
