In Response To: Coke and Pepsi commercials (Mark Seely)

: I have a question. Has there been a conscious strategy to make
: Coke commercials really attractive--which they are--and to
: make Pepsi commercials really lame and irritating--which
: they REALLY are?

I've been assigned the task of doing some TV analysis. So I've been watching a particular television show that is new this season. One of the stand out things I've noticed is the Coca-Cola ads. They are horrible.

Dirty looking people spending some down time on rooftops apparently watching the sun rise (or set?). Mystery words that make a sentence that is a sales slogan MagicMarkered on the bottoms of the cans.

Ignorant looking Hee-Haw types dancing around a fire in the woods with some more of the dirty looking patchouli oil crowd. Like a spoof on the Bohemian Grove thing. Like drink some Coca-Cola and you may be initiated into the outermost ring. More mystery words markered onto the bottom of Coke cans making a sentence that is a lame sales slogan.

Doesn't drinking from aluminium cans contribute to the eventual onset of Alzheimer's disease?

These commercials are pretty dysthetic.

Have you seen them?

I know that what I have written supra is a knee jerk off the top diatribe. Maybe later I will have some serious well thought out ideas on the subject.

: I have never understood why Pepsi has always made really lame
: commercials. Who they are trying to appeal to in those
: commercials? The ones with the little girl singing with a
: diva's voice, the "Uh huh" ones, etc., etc. Ick.

The Pepsi commercials I hate are the ones with Cuba Gooding character right up in the camera with close ups like those of the Taco Bell hairless dog. Those really made me want to reach out slap someone. (My knee hasn't stopped yet.)

Cheers,

vM

: There's a conspiracy theory right there. Pepsi shoots itself
: in the foot intentionally. Kind of like the Republican
: party. Maybe the same people are in control of both Coke
: and Pepsi, to make us think we have a choice. Just like the
: situation with the Democans/Republicrats. Man, that's
: starting to sound like a cliche. History is a cliche.

: I drink Sam's Cola and Vess Cola myself. I wonder how those
: brands rate on the Lucifer meter. Maybe we shouldn't be
: drinking any soda at all. I'm starting to think that buying
: anything unnecessary is likely to be supporting something
: evil--new cars, CD's, snack foods, fast foods, video
: rentals, DVD's, home theater systems, etc., etc.
