USA Spending From Now To Doomsday
By Steven Pearlstein
Friday, February 6, 2004
You can imagine the howls of laughter and derision, particularly from Republicans, if somebody were to suggest that the way to solve some pressing social problem was to create a federal department and throw a lot of money at it........ "Nobody is in the mood right now to challenge the idea that we have to spend a lot more on defense and homeland security right now," said Brookings Institution scholar Michael O'Hanlon........ Let's begin with pure logic. To support throwing a lot more money at defense and homeland security, you either have to believe that the people at the Pentagon and Homeland Security are somehow more clever than those at all those agencies where such strategies have failed, or that the problem of terrorism is unique in being solved by more spending. There is no evidence for either proposition........ In money terms, however, all this pales when put up against the Pentagon's runaway procurement budget. Instead of following through on its promise to transform the military into a more flexible, mobile, high-tech fighting force to combat terrorism and rogue nations, the administration now says we have to do all that while going ahead with production of new fighter planes, helicopters, submarines and missile defense shields designed to counter threats and overwhelm enemies that no longer exist......... Now it looks as though politicians of both parties are determined to make the same mistake responding to the terrorism threat: confusing spending more with spending smart.

Japan To Boost Banking System With Taxpayers' Money (plunder continues)
TOKYO, (AFP) Fri Feb 6, 2:52 AM ET - Japan's cabinet has approved a set of bills that would allow the government to boost the banking system with taxpayers' money, as part of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's economic revival plans.
Under the new regulations yet to be approved in parliament, banks that wish to use public funds to improve profitability -- whether via a merger or on their own -- will have to draft three-year management plans. If the government approves the plans, after consulting private experts, it will be able to inject public funds into those banks.......If the banks fail to achieve goals under their plans, their managers would be held responsible, and the government might ask them to resign.....
