The comments posted in this thread by Bison_Bill are very well considered and presented with great eloquence: however, I will have to dissent from his conclusions, even though his analysis of "Janet's bared breast" was so very rich in acumen. Earlier today I received a picture, captured from a still frame of the video, which shows the adornment on her breast, close-up.
It is an eight-pointed solar medal, or star, either secured to her flesh with cosmetic glue, or secured by means of a piercing through her nipple ( which I am told is only painful when it's done, and after it heals, is not bothersome ).
From a distance it looks like a strip-tease dancer's "pasty," but when viewed in close-up, in fact, it is a distinct and definite EMBLEM, medallion or badge !! What, precisely, this eight-pointed Solar medallion or star is supposed to mean ... is a separate question ( which I urge all of our News Agents to explore and consider ).
Here is the point, and here is the point at which I must dissent from Bison_Bill, concerning Justin and Janet --
EVERY MOVEMENT OF THE DANCE ROUTINE WHICH PUT JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE NEXT TO, IN FRONT OF, BEHIND, AND THEN ON HER LEFT OR SINISTER SIDE -- WAS PLANNED. IT WAS ALL PLANNED.
IT WAS ALL PRECISELY SCRIPTED AND STAGED !!
The complicated dance movements and high-speed choreography, which were compiled into the presentation of her song "Rhythm Nation," and then into the combined movements of Timberlake and Jackson leading to this exposure of her Starry Breast ... fit exactly the patterns and plannings she has done for more than thirteen years, or since her ground-breaking Rhythm Nation 1814 tour of 1990 !!!
The argument that Justin Timberlake stripped her by force and thus humiliated her in front of millions of viewers is simply unsupportable, by the evidence of this well-staged dance routine.
Timberlakes was on his marks. He was exactly where he was supposed to be at the final moments of the song/dance routine, and as the lyrics were winding up and as the camera was capturing their image as a twosome, a duo .... PRECISELY.
Stripping that break-away piece of the costume at the very denouement of this dance of seduction, with Janet Jackson clearly holding the power of her presence on the stage until the final moment of surrender, shows a deeper and more subtle pattern of thought and imaging. Yes, it is fair to draw the conclusion that she's been "reduced" in stature by this seemingly harsh and rude treatment -- if the facts of the performance will support that this was done on an impulse and not by planning. The facts will not support that.
The break-away piece of the costume was there to enable Justin Timberlake, the popular "boy-band singer," to accomplish two highly symbolic tasks --
One, as the male activating force, he moves towards and around Janet Jackson during the dance routines, while she remains independent of his movements even though they are often touching; he is wooing her, she is luring him, they are doing a subtle dance of seduction before a hundred million viewers -- so is there any reason to think that these two highly skilled performers are unaware of their positions, their staging, or that they cannot hit their marks on that stage ??
Two, as the female cultivating force, Janet Jackson wears a costume which is magnificently tailored for her look and her style, which accents her commanding physical beauty while providing near total coverage, which plays dramatically against the blandness of Timberlake's attire; she moves with a highly confident and coyly sexual grace, which cannot be mistaken for any kind of fear or discomfort !!!
When their duet and dance routine comes to its end, Timberlake reaches across her body to strip the break-away piece from her costume --
*** he is not violating her private space or abusing her person, he is LIBERATING her and 'activating' her delivery of the key to understanding encoded messages of the routine, if not of the whole half-time show ~
*** he is not denigrating her or diminishing her status as a Star, a talented womanchild, or a coy "girlfriend;" he is REVEALING her as the new Ms. Liberty -- bearing the fruits of the sun, the solar star, pinned literally to her beautiful mammary !!! She's not shocked and horrified by being stripped at the moment of her surrender, in this dance of seduction, on the contrary, she's happy, and she's exceptionally well-pleased !!
