Interesting stuff. Re: Patriotlad's post...The original Nebraska
constitution of 1866 included a boundary description. This document is
on display at the Nebraska Historical Society at Lincoln (copies can be
had). It reads in part, "...at a point 20 degrees west of Washington..."
which purports to be the most eastern point of Nebraska. Well, 20
degress of longitude west of the marker in DC is nowhere near Nebraska
and besides, according to the US Geological Survey office in Virginia (I
telephoned them), Greenwich, England for 500 years has been the zero
point for surveying and navigational purposes. Original and early state
constitutions included lawful boundary descriptions, however, during the
latter part of the 1800's (post Lincoln's War) and in this century,
"revised" state constitutions began appearing sans boundaries. By the
way, we ran across a Nebraska district court case in which the judge
affirmed the validity of the original 1866 Nebraska constitution (don't
have the cite handy). So, revised constitutions don't necessarily
supercede or make void the earlier.
