That very persecution compelled many Jews to learn HOW to make money everywhere and as much and fast as they can/could (while betraying Moses Laws, and they eventually pay for that), that's why Jews ended up holding so many financial positions, functioning like a clan/mafia, and not only in banking. Survival (the "greedy Jew" cliche is accurate therefore) was the first motive in a world hostile to them, then of course the scheme became much more elaborated (conspiracy) as we know.
Let's keep in mind the corruption of the monetray system is as old as Babylon. Jews and the Christian Church didnt invent anything. Marco Polo too witnessed the disasters of fiat money in China.
