INDONESIA / SINGAPORE:
Singapore Perpetrating State Terrorism On Indonesia
Singapore perpetrating state terrorism on Indonesia, says paper
By Devi Asmarani
STRAITS TIMES INDONESIA BUREAU 27-2-2002
JAKARTA - The Koran Tempo daily yesterday said Singapore was perpetrating state terrorism on Indonesia by pressuring it to arrest terrorist suspects.
The Indonesian-language newspaper, in an editorial, also challenged Singapore to prove its allegations that terrorists were roaming freely in the country.
The editorial was aimed at a recent commentary in The Straits Times which called on the Indonesian government and media to re-examine their view that there was an international conspiracy against Jakarta.
In a response which was infused with sarcasm, Koran Tempo said Singapore should not be puzzled by the negative views which emerged here following Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew's recent remarks that there were terrorists at large in Indonesia.
'The solution is very simple. If the people have been accused as being terrorists by 'intelligence information', what proof can Singapore provide?'
It noted that during the Suharto era, the government then could arrest people easily by rigging evidence against them. There was also the anti-subversion law.
The paper said that the Indonesian government no longer had these powers. Now, it must have a strong case against an individual before it can arrest him, 'especially for such serious allegations of planning an attack that can kill hundreds, even thousands of people'.
Koran Tempo said that Indonesia did not support terrorism. But it 'did not want to be consumed by the hysteria of war against terrorism'.
Demonstrations against Singapore and Mr Lee's remarks continued for the second day yesterday, when some 500 members of hardline groups protested outside the Singapore Embassy.
The Tempo Group publications have been among the most critical of allegations that a terrorist network operates in the country.
A recent editorial in Tempo magazine charged that Indonesia was a target of Singapore and other governments, which have 'been diligently making use of America's anger towards radical Islamic groups believed to be behind the Sept 11 attacks'

Indonesia: Bali bombing inspires conspiracy theories
http://www.caprn.bc.ca/caprnmon/vol2no2.html
Shockwaves from the October 12 bombing outside nightclubs in Kuta Beach, around which much of Bali's tourist industry revolves, quickly reached Jakarta, the Indonesian capital.
Despite calls by human rights and other organizations in Indonesia for careful investigations and a judicious governmental response, fears of a renewed militarization of the country on the pretext of "fighting terrorism" were widely expressed. Some Indonesians saw the U.S. CIA and the Indonesian armed forces as the most likely perpetrators of the bombing, according to local talk shows and media commentaries.
The conspiracy theorists argued that the act itself was a means of pressing a reluctant Indonesia into an impending war against Iraq, and that offers of investigative assistance were a ploy to "infiltrate" American troops and bases into the country so as to establish another foothold in Asia.

The bomb blasts that killed more than 180 people in Bali have focused international attention on links between Indonesia's radical Islamist groups and the Al-Qaeda terrorist network. But among Indonesians, a conspiracy theory has been gaining popular currency -- one that puts the blame on the United States. RFE/RL examines why some Indonesians are alleging that U.S. agents may have carried out the Bali attack.
