Jakarta Bomb Blast: JI down but not out!
THE Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) still poses a serious threat to South-east Asia despite 190 of its members put behind bars over the past year.
Terrorism experts and analysts yesterday warned countries in the region to brace themselves for similar bombings, like the attack on JW Marriott hotel in Jakarta yesterday, in the coming months.
.....
A Boston-based terrorist expert, Dr Zachary Abuza, told The Malay Mail that key JI leaders and foot soldiers who are lying low are capable of striking any moment, similar to the latest hotel bombing, at the slightest opportunity.
“Countries in this region, especially Indonesia, should brace themselves for more of such attacks in the coming months,” he said yesterday, when contacted.
Abuza, also a professor at the Department of Political Science and International Relations of Simmons College, in Boston, Massachusetts, said he believes that JI will strike at more soft targets.
“There are open targets vulnerable to attacks and it is difficult and almost impossible to defend such places,” he said.
.....
Security expert Andrew Tan at Singapore’s Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies said that with the recovery of a cache of firearms, including rocket launchers, chemicals and firearms in Jakarta and Semarang in Central Java last month, the plot to bomb American, Australian and Singaporean targets in Bangkok, Thailand, two months ago, showed JI is alive and kicking.
“Based on the network’s activities over the past months, they are capable of mounting attacks at the shortest time,” said Tan.
He said that with top JI leaders still on the loose and foot soldiers capable of fixing bombs “they can be deployed to hit soft targets at anytime, anywhere.”
He said it is easy for JI to strike and the costs of pulling off such operations will be relatively expensive.
“Countries in this region should be vigilant,” said Tan.
