WTC ARCHITECT DESIGNED BUILDINGS FOR SAUDIS/BIN LADEN
You wrote: "[H]as anyone done any tracking as to what the other buildings are which were designed by Japanese architect Minora Yamasaki?"
Further research uncovers that Yamasaki was a favorite architect of the Bin Laden family patrons, i.e. the Saudi royal family. [See http://slate.msn.com/?id=2060207] Yamasaki's company won't say whether the Bin Laden family, who made their initial fortune in construction [and has their own (explosive?) concrete plants], particularly for the Saudi royals, was involved in constucting Yamasaki's projects. But since the Bin Laden Group constructed so many projects in Saudi Arabia, the chances are high that they built at least some of Yamasaki's projects there. Furthermore, two Frenchmen have published a book alleging that Osama Bin Laden's terrorist activities were funded, at least partially, by his family's Bin Laden construction firm, and which was named along with the Saudis and numerous other defendants in a lawsuit by 9/11 survivors.
Also of interest, perhaps the overriding theme of Yamasaki's career is his use of Islamic architecture in projects such as the Seattle World's Fair, the Eastern Airlines Logan Airport Terminal, the North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe IL, along with the WTC. One ostensible reason for Osama's alleged attack on the WTC was his disgust with Yamasaki's blend of Islamic architecture and Western commerce. From the above link:
"...Yamasaki replicated the plan of Mecca's courtyard [in the WTC] by creating a vast delineated square, isolated from the city's bustle by low colonnaded structures and capped by two enormous, perfectly square towers...Yamasaki's courtyard [in the WTC] mimicked Mecca's assemblage of holy sites--the Qa'ba (a cube) containing the sacred stone, what some believe is the burial site of Hagar and Ishmael, and the holy spring--by including several sculptural features, including a fountain, and he anchored the composition in a radial circular pattern, similar to Mecca's."
BTW, I made a mistake in editing the article re:Yamasaki's citzenship. I learned that he was American-born after my initial draft, but neglected to make the change. My thanks to Patriotlad for pointing this out.
It's great to hear from you, my friend. Thanks for your defense in my absence, along with your much-appreciated comments.
