You have to study Bearden's material I think, and make up your own mind. It took me (a layman) 6 months of struggle to get just the basic idea of his 30 years of research. He is definitely not a kook or a crank.
You also have to understand that Bearden naturally has many detractors because he more or less throws out the 100 year-old current electromagnetic theory, correcting it by restoring "lost" equations. This is like telling other scientists "everything you learned in school about electromagnetics is wrong!" For some fragile egos this is just too much and they just dismiss Bearden. This always happens with any breakthrough theory and it usually takes a generation (until the "old" scientists die off) to become common knowledge.
So there are a lot of "sour grapes" reactions to Bearden's work. All I can say is put in some effort to understand his ideas. It is those who dismiss his theories out-of-hand who are the real cranks (IMHO).
