San Diego Teen Gets 50 Years in School Shooting
Thu Aug 15, 7:32 PM ET
SAN DIEGO, (Reuters) - A 16-year-old boy who said he was victimized by bullies was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison on Thursday for fatally shooting two students and wounding 13 other people at his San Diego-area school.
Charles "Andy" Williams was 15 when he brought his father's .22-caliber revolver to Santana High School in the San Diego suburb of Santee on March 5, 2001, and opened fire from the door of a school bathroom.
The six-minute shooting rampage killed Bryan Zuckor, 14, and Randy Gordon, 17, and injured 11 other students and two staff members.
Williams pleaded guilty on June 20 to two counts of murder, 13 counts of premeditated attempted murder and special allegations of lying in wait and multiple murder.
Because the nature and number of charges, the judge could have sentenced Williams to up to 425 years in prison plus 13 life terms.
In pronouncing his sentence, San Diego County Superior Court Judge Herbert Exharos said that although the crime showed "a high degree of cruelty," state law prohibited him from sentencing a 15-year-old to a no-parole prison term.
Exharos said Williams will first be eligible for parole in 2051, when he is 65.
