Yeltsin Says Russia Seeks "Multi-Polar" World
"MOSCOW, Aug 31, 1999 -- (Reuters) President Boris Yeltsin,
receiving the credentials of 12 new ambassadors on Tuesday,
seized the chance to plug his favorite idea of a "multi-polar"
world - code for resisting what Russia sees as U.S. domination."
""The main task is create a stable, multi-polar world. It must be
based on the norms and principles of international law, on all
countries taking account of others' interests," he said."
""We are counting on the contribution of your states to the
creation of a new multi-polar world system," he told the
gathering, which included new envoys from Italy, the Netherlands,
Ireland, Estonia, Bangladesh and Nicaragua."
"Yeltsin also pushed his vision of a "multi-polar" world last week
during a trip to Kyrgyzstan for a summit of five Asian countries,
including China, which Moscow sees as an ally in its attempts to
weaken Washington's dominance."

"The meeting with Jiang gave Russia and China another chance
to speak against the ``unipolar world'' - their favorite
term to describe the alleged U.S. domination of global
affairs."
"``We stand for the United Nations playing a stronger role in
global affairs,'' Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told
reporters after Putin's meeting with Jiang. ``We favor a
multipolar world based on respect for international law.''"
"The meeting with Schroeder mostly focused on economic
issues, and the two leaders agreed that the chancellor would
soon visit Moscow, probably as early as this month."
"Schroeder and Putin said they would discuss Germany's bid to
become a permanent member of the United Nations' Security
Council. Ivanov said after the talks that Moscow was ready
to support it."
