BUSH FAMILY CIA PAST

On the Bush Family

On the Far Right

These leaders of the New Right include (notorious Clinton hater) Richard Mellon Scaife, Paul Weyrich and the Coors, DeVos (Amway), Hunt (Oil), Koch (Oil), Krieble (Loctite), Noble, Olin & Van Andel (Amway) families. In fact, oilman George Bush Sr. comes from this very same class of people. His tenure as CIA Director is but a small part of a long history with the Intelligence community, which has included Richard Mellon Scaife, and the other New Right leaders. It is highly unlikely that Bush would have been appointed CIA Director, without some prior experience within the Agency. Indeed, there have been reports that Bush was possibly a CIA operative since at least 1961.
What's more, the Bush Family's CIA affiliation appears to originate with the OSS, the WWII Agency that preceded the CIA. Robert Lovett, the business partner of Bush's father Prescott, was an OSS Officer, along with Mellon Scaife's father Alan and their Mellon relatives. In fact, Paul Mellon was the OSS Station Chief in London. Prescott could not (officially at least) be involved in the OSS, since his assets were seized in 1942 under the Trading With the Enemy Act, for collaborating with Nazi industrialists. [1] . It was Robert Lovett and the Committee bearing his name that recommended the creation of the CIA as the post-WWII descendant of the OSS. After the war, Lovett and another of Prescott's business partners, Averell Harriman, were directly involved with the CIA. Given that many of Prescott Bush's cronies enjoyed a long association with the CIA, it is likely that Prescott was involved with the Agency as well. (Those interested in looking more deeply into the elite roots of the OSS and the CIA should read about Yale's "Skull and Bones" society -- a.k.a "the Bonesmen" [2] ).
In the seventies, while George Bush Sr. was in the wings for the CIA Directorship, Richard Mellon Scaife ran Forum World Features, a CIA front for a European propaganda operation. There are also reports that Scaife was likely involved in the Heritage Foundation's funding of Iran-Contra, along with Heritage President Edwin Feulner. Contrary to what he still declares to this day, then-Vice President Bush Sr. was clearly "in the loop" of Iran-Contra, as Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger's notes demonstrated. Furthermore, Admiral John Poindexter claimed that he conferred directly with Bush about the Iran-Contra scheme. Also, Bush and his assistant Donald Gregg communicated regularly with Felix Rodriguez, the notorious ex-CIA agent at the heart of the Contra Supply operation [See Lawrence Walsh's "Firewall", W.W. Norton & Co., 1997; pp. 271-272]. In recent years, the CIA Inspector General's Report confirmed that the Contras were trafficking in cocaine, under the watch of Oliver North and the CIA [3] . There is strong evidence that the Contras used North's planes (financed in part by Joe Coors) for their drug-running. Although a Congressional investigation into Contra-Cocaine was recently concluded, there remain lingering questions about the role North's team and the CIA played in this enterprise. [Click here to go beyond the headlines -- What the recent Congressional Investigations actually revealed].
During this period, both Presidents Reagan and Bush appointed Mellon Scaife to the US Advisory Committee for Public Diplomacy, which oversaw the US Information Agency. A key component of the White House Spin Machine, the USIA worked hand in hand with Walter Raymond's interagency propaganda operation. The mission of Raymond's outfit (code-named "Project Truth") was to manipulate US public opinion in favor of the Reagan-Bush foreign policies. [See Robert Parry's "Lost History" for details [4] ]. In 1983, the USIA's director, Charles Z. Wick, held a fundraiser in support of the Iran-Contra activities. With the help of Scaife's lieutenants, Wick collected over $400,000 in private funds from the likes of the Smith Richardson and Olin Foundations [5] . [Also, see the National Security Archive's "Iran-Contra Collection", May 1983]. Later, Frank Shakespeare, yet another Heritage board member, served as the USIA's Director.
Ultimately, President George Bush dealt the final blow to Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh's prosecution of the Iran-Contra affair. Less than a month before leaving office, Bush pardoned Caspar Weinberger and the other defendants awaiting trial. Bush also issued sweeping pardons to those previously convicted ["Firewall", p. 493]. In so doing, Bush clearly abused his Presidential power to avoid further exposure of his Iran-Contra role, which had been definitely established by Weinberger's notes.

BUSH FAMILY NAZI PAST
In the fall of 1937 a young 14 year old George Herbert Walker Bush (aka Poppy) was entering his first year at Andover Prep. At the time Andover was molded after British "public schools" and felt more or less like a military academy. Fitzhugh Green has written that Andover " tended to graduate homogeneous boys with no more originality that the products of a cutter." Nicknamed Andover's Headmaster at the time was Dr. Claude Moore Fuess, "Iron" , and was always heard screaming "Other schools have boys, but Andover has men!"
Dr. Fuess recruited Yale Ph.D Arthur B. Darling who was given absolute authority of the History department and its curriculum. Hart Day Levitt remembers Darling "insisted that the way to teach" was "through fear."
For George Upson Waller, who grew up with George Bush, and in the late 1930's together shared an Andover Math teacher, fear was taken to the extreme. Professor Michael Sides, according Mr. Waller was "quite a horror" and "rather a fascist". "The more he humiliated me the tighter I got, the more he seemed to enjoy it. It was true psychological sadism of the worst possible sort" Mr. Waller recalled.
Professor Sides was a also a Nazi and in late 30's. Nazism was becoming in vogue in some elite Wasp circles. During the late 30's and early 40's Professor Sides would suspend his math lesson and would spend the class time discussing current events and politics. "He was a Nazi. He would talk glowingly of Hitler" recalled Mr. Waller. Although Professor Sides was a Nazi, not to mention a teacher from hell, Poppy , according to Mr. Waller was the teacher pet. "He seemed to enjoy" Professor Sides and his other teachers Mr. Waller states "even the most authoritarian. Bush would never defy." Even though Professor Sides was a Nazi "Bush thought he was a great teacher" Mr. Waller told GVG over the weekend.
But President Bush might also have been influenced by his father Senator Prescott Bush, who by 1938 along with Father in law, George Walker, had been financially supporting Adolph Hitler and other German-Nazi corporations for over 13 years
------------
According to John Loftus and Mark Aarons' book, The Secret War Against The Jews: How Western Espionage Betrayed the Jewish People: St. Martin's Press 1994, Prescott Bush's heavily connected father-in-law George Herbert Walker was "one of Hitler's most powerful supporters in the United States. The relationship went all the back to 1924, when Fritz Thyssen, the German industrialist, was financing Hitler's infant Nazi Party." Thyssen went on to write a book about this period titled I Paid Hitler published in 1941.
The author goes on to say that through Union Banking, a subsidiary of W.A. Harriman & Company, sold $50 million German bonds to American investors. George Walker, who was president of Union Banking, landed his son-in-law Prescott Bush a job as Vice President of W.A. Harriman & Company. Between 1926 and 1934, while Thyssen and other German industrialists consolidated Hitler's political power, Union Banking became an "out and out Nazi money-laundering machine."
In 1931 Prescott Bush became a senior partner of newly formed Brown Brothers, Harriman, when Harriman and Company merged with a British investment firm. Three years later George Walker placed his son-in-law Prescott on the board of directors of Union Banking.
That same year in 1934, a congressional investigation believed that Walker's "Hamburg-America Line "subsidized a wide range of Pro-Nazi Propaganda efforts both in Germany and the Untied States." One of Walker's employees Dan Harkins, secretly told congressional leaders about the Walker's Nazi sympathies and business transactions.
For the next 8 years, that investigation, continued in a giant paper chase and an epic of legal maneuvering. Finally in the fall of 1942 the US Government had charged Prescott Bush with "running Nazi front groups in the Untied States." The Government under the Trading with the Enemy Act, seized all of Union Banking's shares. "Once the Government, had its hands on Bush's books, the whole story of the intricate web of Nazi front corporations began to unravel."
According to US Government's Vesting Order No. 248, huge sections of Prescott Bush's empire had been operated on behalf of Nazi Germany and had greatly assisted the German war effort. On November 17th, 1942 in an odd about face The US Government announced that it was only seizing the Nazi interests at Bush's bank, allowing Hitler's US partners to carry on with business as usual.
But did the Bush families Nazi sympathies and association end in the fall of 1942? Apparently not.
---------------
In late summer, during the 1988 campaign, the seeds of a major Bush scandal began to take roots. On August 2 1988, the Bush campaign, in a press conference announced the formation the Coalition of American Nationalities to coordinate the campaign activities of "ethnic groups".
Five weeks later on September 8th, The Washington Jewish Week charged that several of Bush's ethnic advisory committee were "well known anti-Semites and pro-fascists." The article focused on four Bush advisors, including Jerome Brentar, who had worked with groups who claimed the Holocaust was a hoax, Ignatius Billinsky president of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America which is described by Reporter Russ Bellant as "heavily influenced" by "anti Semites and collaborators with Hitler and apologists for Nazism."
The article also focused on Florian Galdau who was described by Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal "as the leader of a Romanian pro-Nazi and anti-Semitic movement in New York City", and known racist and anti-Semite Philip Guarino. The most shocking character though was Laszlo Pasztor, who served in World War II as "an official in a anti-Semitic Hungarian government controlled by the anti-Semitic Arrow Cross"
Henry Siegman executive director of the American Jewish Congress said that "It suggests a high degree of insensitivity or incompetence on the part of Bush's staff." Mr. Siegman also expected Bush to "not only remove these people but to repudiate what they stand for." Albert Vorspan, senior vice-president of the Union of American Hebrews called the story "outrageous and frightening" that the Bush campaign would harbor such "notorious extremists." Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League said "there is no place in any campaign for anti-Semites. The League urges that these persons be summarily removed."
The Bush campaign spokesman Mark Goodin, announced at a press conference about the charges: " If there is anything to them, we'll take action." James Baker, Bush campaign chairman later said "There is no place in this campaign for anti-Semitism, racism, bigotry or people who espouse these views. Any individuals with those views will not be welcome in this campaign."
On September 9th Bush spokesmen Mark Goodin announced that Jerome Brentar had resigned from the campaign. Two days later, The Washington Post carried a story that Bush Advisor Fred Malek had also resigned from the campaign. Malek, according to the Post, while serving as aide to President Nixon had compiled lists of employees with "Jewish-sounding" names that Nixon suspected were part of a "Jewish" cabal at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Michael Miller, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council tells the New York Times "There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that these individuals have expressed sympathies with Nazism."
On September 12 the Bush Campaign announced five more resignations from Galdua and Guarino, Billinsky, Pasztor and Bohan Fedorak. It was soon revealed that Mr. Fedorak hosted a Bush campaign appearance in July of 1988 which was co-hosted by a pro-Nazi group.
A few days later Radi Slavoff, national co-chairman of Bulgarians for Bush, becomes the seventh Nazi sympathizer to resign.
On September 15th CNN runs an interview with Jerome Brentar, who claims he never really resigned from the Bush campaign and denied that the Nazis deliberately gassed Jews during the Holocaust. Bush spokesperson David Sandor quickly responded to the interview: "This is obviously in conflict with what we have said. We stand by what we have said. Mr. Sandor also said that "George Bush is their friend" in regard to the seven staffers who resigned.
On September 27, in a Boston Herald column Alan Dershowitz revealed that he had information regarding the Republican Party and Nazi sympathizers. Mr. Dershowitz writes "I first heard about the presence of Nazis in the hierarchy of the Republican Party as far back as 1970." While he was working on the New York Governor's race Dershowitz said he "learned that several members of a Republican 'Captive Nations Committee' were Nazi sympathizers who had been personally involved in the Holocaust in Europe, as well as with racist and neo-Nazi groups in America."
That same day, New York Post columnist Pete Hamill wrote a column "George Bush And His Fascist Fan Club" and quotes Menachem Roseensaft, president of the Labor Zionist Alliance and leader of the International Network of Children of the Holocaust: "Clearly Bush wanted them out once they were exposed, but he still wants the votes of their constituency."
Four days before election day, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that another Bush ethnic coalition leader Akselis Mangulis, is accused of belonging to the Latvian Legion, which during World War II was connected to the Nazi SS. Before the paper hit the stand Mr. Mangulis resigned. The following Tuesday, mostly because of his strategist Lee Atwater's self proclaimed "guerrilla tactics" Bush defeated Michael Dukakis in a landslide.
Even though James Baker said there was "no place in the campaign for anti-Semitism (and) racism" Bush campaign strategist Lee Atwater, a protιgι of Senator Strom Thurmond, who used anti-Semitism to win a congressional seat for Carroll Campbell in 1978, stayed in his position while this whole scandal erupted. Mr. Atwater also created the notoriously racist Willie Horton ad, associating Michael Dukakis with images of black prisoners furloughed from jail raping and pillaging the streets of White America.
Over a year later on February 2 1990 in a USA Today article, Tom Squitieri writes that "Four Key Republican activists, ousted from George Bush's 1988 campaign amid charges of anti-Semitic or pro-fascist links are back working for the party." According the article, two of the four were Fred Malek and Phil Guarino.
GW Bush was a major part of damage control for the Bush '88 campaign and helped rooting out the Nazis when these stories broke. When a scandal broke it was GW who went into action to protect his father. But did GW know about these seven rouge Nazis and Neo Nazis before they were ousted by the press?
What about GW's own ties to Nazi sympathies? Besides helping cover up his Father's Nazi collaborators there is not much. But their is one story about GW Bush GVG has discovered that refuses to die.
--------------------
GW Bush, along with his father George and grandfather Prescott, all belong to the Yale secret society Skull and Bones. Skull and Bones, founded in 1832 is an enormous secret network of ruling class power. Pillared under Wall Street, The CIA, Old Money, oil money and sometimes the Oval Office, Skull and Bones is a who's who of power in America.
Over the year there have been wild stories written about Skull and Bones. Some stories are true but most, like Richard Mulligan's Skull and Bones Web site, are total frauds.
There are many credible stories, specifically revolving around Skull and Bones' bizarre collection of items they store in their grim, windowless tomb. Built in 1856 and later remodeled in 1864 after a faculty break-in, Skull and Bones has had many scandals revolving around what it actually possesses within the Tomb.
For instance, it is a known fact that in 1933, Prescott Bush ripped the famous Native American Geronimo's skull out of its grave and brought it back to the Tomb. Why did Prescott Bush feel it was all right to steal the scared remains out of someone's grave? Was it his arrogance, racism, or just plain sadistic pleasure that motivated grampa Bush? The answer is still a mystery to this day.
In 1986 Apache leader Ned Anderson met with Endicott Davison, Skull and Bones lawyer and George Bush's brother Jonathan Bush. They handed Mr. Anderson a skull they claimed was Geronimo's . Mr. Anderson examined the skull and concluded that Mr. Davison and Mr. Bush were lying to him about the skull being Geronimo's. The meeting abruptly ended and to this the day the Bush Family nor Skull and Bones have returned the skull to its rightful owners.
It was also revealed that Skull and Bones has a collection of children's and infant's skulls in the Tomb. William Melton, the Skull and Bones cook, admitted to American Journal that he has seen at least "25 skulls". When GVG asked Mr. Melton if what he told the AJ reporter was true he shouted back "Yeah so what!" and slammed the phone down.
On September 29th 1876 a group of students broke into the Tomb through the roof and later wrote about what they discovered. After breaking through a skylight in the roof the students slid down into the tomb. What they found besides a collection a skulls lit by candle light, was a vast collection of memorabilia hanging from the walls and scattered through the Tomb. Inside the tomb, the students wrote, was a vast "memorabilia room".
Soon after the break in Skull and Bones published a pamphlet that mocked the students investigation and circulated it around campus . They did however admit that in the Tomb "hangs a picture of Napoleon Bonaparte."
But over the last few decades a story circled around Yale campus about another violent historical figure that was so horrifying most students didn't or could not believe it. It was said that one of the seven secret societies on Yale campus had Hitler's silverware in its archives and every so often, served dinners with it on special occasions.
In September 1977 Esquire magazine published Ron Ronsenbaum's "The Last Secrets of Skull and Bones." In the article Mr. Rosenbuam writes about the Hitler silverware story, but eludes that it is Scroll and Key, the second most powerful society at Yale, that is the owner of the ghoulish knick-knack.
The Boston Globe's editor of the editorial page and former Washington Post foreign correspondent to Indochina, Hugh F Greens, is a member of Scroll and Key. Mr. Greens told GVG over the weekend " I would be willing to say on The record that Scroll and Key has never owned anything of Hitler's."
Lawrence Bensky a senior Pacifica correspondent at KPFA in Berkeley is a member of Berzelius, the third in rank and power. Bensky told GVG "it certainly wasn't Berzelius" that owned Hitler's silverware, "I would have noticed that. Berzelius was relatively benign, we didn't get in to all that mumbo jumbo like Skull and Bones or Scroll and Key." Mr. Bensky claims he was "felt out" by Skull and Bones and other societies but was turned down because he was Jewish. "I think Skull and Bones had one or two Jews in it, but I didn't feel comfortable even talking to people who are generally racially exclusive" Mr. Bensky said.
GVG made several attempts to contact, out of a pool of 30, as many Bonesman as possible. Fourteen of these Bonesmen were from GW Bush's "cell" from 1968. Out of 30 contacts GVG was able to get three Bonesmen to talk on the record. All three Bonesmen would not deny that Skull and Bones owned Hitler's silverware.
Dr. William Cowdry and GW Bush became Bonesmen together in 1968 and have been friends ever since. GVG spoke to Dr. Cowdry this summer and when we asked directly, if Skull and Bones had possession of, or, if he or GW Bush have eaten off of Hitler's silverware, he replied "I think the position to take is, look, there are areas of life that we value highly, and (we) do not want it to end up in your magazine." Dr. Cowdry said to GVG that becoming a Bonesmen was "the greatest experience of my life." When GVG asked Dr. Cowdry if Skull and Bones practiced devil worship he barked "Absolutely not! That's outrageous!"
Professor Roy Leslie Austin, from St. Vincent Islands, was also "tapped" the same night as GW and Dr. Cowrdy. He said he did not "recall" seeing Hitler's silverware, but when GVG asked if Skull and Bones was racist or anti-Semitic Prof. Austin said "Of course, this is America, and one is sometimes a bit suspicious when you have to associate with whites." Prof. Austin told GVG, while we were interviewing him, that he drank a little too much rum and "normally this is not something we discuss with outsiders."
George Upson Waller, who grew up with George Bush Sr. in Greenwich Connecticut, and went to Andover and Yale together was also "tapped" in Skull and Bones. Mr. Waller is part of a special "cell" from 1945 which only had 10 members instead of the standard 15: "It was during the war years and they weren't terribly selective at that point. They were more desperate and only ended up taking 10 people my year. Most people were off at the war. In a normal year I wouldn't have made it."
When GVG asked Mr. Waller about some details regarding Skull and Bones he replied "I suggest you should read Gary Trudeau, he's got a lot of it right. I'm a devotee of him." GVG asked Mr. Waller if knew anything about Hitler's silverware being housed in Skull and Bones tomb he said "I wouldn't deny it. God knows what's in there. There are some crazy things in this world. That is all I can say." Since Mr. Waller was a close friend of the Bush family GVG asked if he knew anything about Geronimo's skull, or, if Skull and Bones kept baby and children skulls. "Well, it is called Skull and Bones." Mr. Waller quickly changed the subject and said he knew GW, but he knew Jeb Bush better. "Someone told me Maureen Dowd wrote an article about GW Bush's substance abuse in his youth, I said I didn't realize he had enough substance to abuse."
Over the weekend GW Bush spoke to the national convention of the Christian Collection on its 10th anniversary. Mr. Bush did not denounce Pat Buchanan or mention "the wave of evil" to this ultra-right constituency and later drew praise from the Rev Pat Robertson. Mr. Robertson also warned GW to lay off the Republican commentator who said Hitler was an "individual of great courage" back in 1977. "It would seem self serving if Bush goes after Buchanan " Robertson said.
Over this weekend, on Fox News Sunday, Elizabeth Dole said that it was time For Pat "to go somewhere else." New York Mayor Giuliani, who endorsed GW on Friday bluntly said on This Weekend with Sam and Cokie, " I strongly oppose Pat Buchanan. He is a negative force in the party."
Will the American public, the media, and his financial supporters tolerate GW Bush reaching out to Pat Buchanan and his "pitchfork brigade" of intolerance, bigotry and hate? Considering the fact GW, after killing major hate-crime* legislation earlier in the year, still holds front runner status in poll numbers in fund raising, maybe.
*The "James Byrd Law", that Bush and his party killed, was named after a black man who was dragged to death behind a truck of white supremacists in Houston, Texas.

: Political ad is uniformly embarrassing
: By Hugh Aynesworth
: DALLAS — Texas homeland security chief David Dewhurst wanted
: Texans to feel confident in these trying times and — as a

: Texans to know he was taking his new anti-terrorism job
: seriously.

: So he purchased a full-color, four-page advertisement in Texas

: The ad layout has received far more comment than any similar

: Early in the week, a stunned Mr. Dewhurst, 56, conceded he had

: between an Air Force uniform and a German uniform,"
: snapped Democrat state Chairwoman Molly Beth Malcolm at an
: Austin party meeting Saturday.
: Friday, with strong backing from Mr. Perry, Mr. Dewhurst
: defended his political ad — saying maybe he should not have

: "If I had it do to over again," said the former
: Houston businessman and one-time Air Force officer and CIA
: agent, "I would have said the same words. I might not

: Homeland Security.'"
: Mr. Dewhurst said that at political gatherings people asked
: him about security issues and that he intended to continue
: to mention his state task force assignment. "Not in a

: added. "I make a point of saying: 'All right, we've

: state issue, and let me tell you what my thoughts are.'
: "I didn't find anything out of the ordinary about saying
