I realized many years ago (and promptly went and got my Permaculture Design Certificate) that North America was designed to have a limited shelf life. It was 1997 I think, I was at a friends house in Vancouver (I live rurally now) and I was watching TV (which I have not access to in my own home for over 20 years) and saw FARMERS in Saskatchewan lining up at FOOD BANKS! Well, I thought to myself, this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

How can farmers not feed themselves FIRST! It makes no sense, now or then. I stopped trusting the cystem (sic) what so ever after Waco, then really lost the plot after the CBC segment on 'hungry farmers'. They are not 'farmers' they are soil miners. Sooner, rather than later, the soil will be gone and the Prairies will become a desert. What then? Do what anybody can do.
Start slowly, at your doorstep, providing at least some of our needs. Chuck out the juniper bush or florally brilliant spectacular-spectacular shrubbery and put in fruit and nut bearing trees, shrubs and vines. use every square inch of earth you own with the bank and utilize it. Make money from it if you've the time. Geesh, my one 10x8 seed start room (about $20.00 a month to light and heat with a 1000 watt MH bulb) has produced over 5000 starts anywhere between $1.00 and $5.00 per start. Not a bad side business considering it takes only about 6 hours a week!
I sponsored a former-Yugoslavian family and got the husband a job with the same Japanese gardener whom I worked on occasion with. When he called back home, he realized that there was no word he could use for 'gardener'. The last time Serbo-Croatian had a word similar was 500 years ago. Nobody in that former country hired anyone to tend useless trees more fit for parks than plots!
We've a long way to go, brother, but if we start now, like today or tomorrow...the landing into the 'next' will be much softer. If you or I or anyone can not, or will not change our doorsteps, we have no right to intrude ideas into more distant realms. I figure.
