The Roman date of July 4 gives America a Cancer Sun-Sign, but serious students have accumulated data that comprehensively supports other Signs for the Sun at America's birth, including Scorpio.
Discussions of America's birth time tend to center on the very interesting and enigmatic "Silby Chart". For the parameters '1776 + silby chart' Google returns only a couple dozen items. (Google list)
In the controversy about America's birth time the "Silby Chart" is of interest because of the enigma it conceals:
"We had already discussed that Sibly's radical angles could only be drawn for London, the location of the Grand Lodge, a fact known to Rudhyar and Robson. However, the planetary positions are those that occurred at noon over Philadelphia..."
The reference is found in a very worthwhile thorough and comprehensively detailed essay by astrologer Ed Kohout on the timing of America's birth and the famous Silby chart.
Ed provides much depth on the mysterious "Mind of Masonry". He points out the social engineering ambitions pegged to the Freemasons, yet touches at many points on suggestions that a higher-octave vision was also at work behind the Silby chart.
Why would Franklin and company, if interested in the astrological benefits of a good Sun/Jupiter [interface], not want to plan the signing of D of I around the 24th of June? One reason may have to do with the rivalry between two camps of Freemasons, the "ancients" and the "moderns." For nearly 25 years before 1776, a schism in the realm of Freemasonry grew to a fevered pitch. The "moderns," meaning Freemasons who were beholden to the Grand Lodge of England of 1717, and who also were a rather elitist group with only a handful of lodges in the principal port cities in the Colonies, began to wane in both numbers and relevance. This was mainly due to efforts of "ancient" Masons, who considered themselves the true adherents to the earliest historic roots of the craft's Medieval heritage, and who proliferated their own brand of Masonry into a broader demographic class of Americans. By the time the Revolution was in full swing, "modern" Freemasons such as Franklin were finding their Masonic positions to be less relevant in their social standing. At Franklin's funeral, there was little mention or reverence to his long and substantial career as a Freemason. This may be a reason for the choice of July 4, as it was a solar return of the chart for the 1717 Grand Lodge, and thus a way to subvert the rising influence of "ancient" Masons who held little respect for the 1717 Grand Lodge.

The chart posted in the message following this one is set for 11 minutes after Midnight EST going into February 1, 2009, showing a very powerful YOD to Saturn, completed by the Moon (therefore, the pattern is in force for about 8 hours). This YOD is in full force when Mercury turns direct.
The yod is very precise: Pegging 11 minutes past Midnight @ Washington Monument, Moon ("mood of the people") is 6 minutes on the clock and 3 arc-minutes past the exact "sextile" (an arc of 60 degrees, providing a strong foundation) with Chiron ("wounded healer").
At Mercury station in 21+ Capricorn the resonance has full participation in the YOD in 20+ Aquarius-Aries-Virgo.
Jupiter is close to the North Node in Aquarius. Uranus is resonantly augmented opposite Saturn and at the mid-point of Moon-Chiron.
