The Moon is erratic Because it's not stationary in the sky.
In fact it is slowly moving with respect to background stars and planets.
The moon completes one orbit of the earth once every 27.3 days.
The moon "creeps" eastward across the background sky about 1 moon diameter per hour.
It is fairly common for the moon to come in front of a star or planet only to have the star reappear in about an hour.
Every day the moon rises about 50 minutes later than the day before.
