Here is some more lion symbolism. Hope it helps.
First of all the Lion is the Sun (like Leo). Its rays are its mane. Samson (Arabic sun god Shams-on) Heracles, Mithra and Apollo are a few "sun gods" with lion affiliations too. One order of Mithraic sun worship was called, "The Lion." The lion throne is still sacred in Buddhism.
Lion symbolism is also figured in worship of the goddess. Hathor (as the Sphinx) was called a lion. Cybele (statue of liberty is modeled after her) rode a chariot pulled by lions (the sun). In Latin America she has a name change and is personified as Madonna Leona (Maria Lionza). Singapore means "city of the lion." Lion images carved on jasper or garnet would cure diseases.
One little known story is the one of the marriage between Jehovah and the Lion goddess, in Palestine, during the 5th century BC. They were worshiped as a divine couple. Some of her names were: Anatha, Baetyl, Anat-Bethel and Ashima Baetyl. She was very like Cybele in character.
