To make greater profits and to split the society further, leaving those who cannot afford it without job and thus, ultimately, means of living. This also makes bio fuels (alcohol, diesel) production economic so the price of corn, sugar and such is rising also, not only because of direct production costs rise that is caused by more expensive oil and it's products. This takes the poorest out of the picture entirely because they cannot buy corn to feed themselves any more. About half of US production of corn now goes to bio fuels.
