: ...in the 1970s there was a big scandal that the
: gold in Fort Knox was stolen by the Rockefellers...

Another blast from the past: Interesting to note that 33 years ago, the Fort Knox gold story appeared in the Los Angeles Times as well as some other media outlets. (From my newspaper research, a partial scan is reprinted at bottom of the page.)
This created a stir amongst various radio talk show hosts around the country who invited author Dr. Peter Beter to be a guest on many of their programs during the late 1970's to early 1980's.
I was informed once that the late Dr. B was a right-hand man to Bobby Kennedy during the 1960's, and that Dr. B's work as general counsel for the Ex-Im Bank was a cover. In other words, there was more to Dr. B's public resume than met the eye.
What happened after this Ft. Knox story was released? To summarize, there was the Fort Knox inspection visit of several congressmen and newspeople on Sept. 23, 1974. It was the first time any average citizen had been allowed inside the Ft. Knox bullion depository in memory.
But no experts on gold were allowed, no assays were run, and some of the witnesses complained that they were only allowed to look at the gold through small peepholes, and a few added that the color of the gold seemed to be wrong.
As a scandal in and of itself, this should have easily compared with Watergate, but the general public had already been completely carried away by the passions of whether or not Nixon was guilty of that infamous third-rate burglary.
After the Sept. 23, 1974 inspection hoax, the Fort Knox story was forgotten (at least by the MSM).

If all this sounds a little far-fetched, if not completely unbelievable, Beter's assertions have nonetheless prompted reactions from responsible quarters.
The Treasury Department last week, to counter rumors spawned by Beter's speeches and appearances on radio and television talk shows, issued a detailed listing of how much gold the government has and where it is.
Almost half of the nation's gold stock of 274 million ounces, 147.4 million ounces, is at Ft. Knox, the department said. The rest is at six other places, including the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada.
Secretary of the Treasury, William E. Simon, in response to questions from Rep. Philip M. Crane (R-Ill.), invited members of a House subcommittee to see for themselves that all that glitters at Ft. Knox is gold and is where it should be.
Crane wants to take Simon up on the invitation.

Part of it [the gold], he [Beter] said, was flown to Mexico on the Rockefeller family jet that carried Henry and Nancy Kissinger on their honeymoon earlier this year.
Beter also said that a source he did not name told him some of the treasure at Ft. Knox had been replaced with lead bars painted to resemble gold.
Beter said he wanted a grand jury to investigate the whole affair. He said he was willing to reveal to a grand jury his sources and such information as the name of a "four-star general" who ordered the secret gold convoys to roll and is "now in hiding in his house."
But Beter indicated he had little faith in any congressional investigation. He said of congressmen, "Their reputation is lower than whale manure. They can be reached."
Only Rep. John R. Rarick (D-La.) "has stood by me," Beter said. An aide to Rarick said his boss did not necessarily endorse Beter's charges but did think they should be investigated.
"Even wilder charges have been investigated by Congress," the aide said.
