A note to Tom ... thank you for your reference to the Declaration of Independence.
In the original version of this inspired document, Thomas Jefferson used the term 'inalienable rights'. Later, when the 'original' Declaration of Independence was to be printed, it was then John Adams who changed the word inalienable to unalienable. Either word is correct. And yes, the words are often used interchangeably. LH

The term inalienable rights (or unalienable rights) refers to a set of human rights that are fundamental, are not awarded by human power, and cannot be surrendered. They are by definition, rights retained by the people. Inalienable rights may be defined as natural rights or human rights, but natural rights are not required by definition to be inalienable.
In the The 1776 United States Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson famously condensed this to:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights. . ." This was changed to unalienable by John Adams at the time of printing the Declaration.
