JAMAICA MAY HAVE BEEN SPARED THE WORST OF HURRICANE DEAN
Jamaica may have been spared the brunt of Dean's fury. Sustained winds in Kingston reached 80 miles per hour, the U.S.- based hurricane center said. At 11 p.m., the storm had traveled about half the island's southern coast.
Kingston's streets were flooded and the island was braced for up to 20 inches of rain, as well as tides 7 to 9 feet above normal, said the center.
Tin Roofs
``Our concern is for the poor people here in houses with tin roofs or walls,'' said Holly Inurreta of Catholic Relief Services, speaking from a sturdy concrete hotel in Kingston. ``Many people didn't want to go to shelters for fear of looting after the storm.''
Catholic Relief Services stockpiled supplies, including plastic sheeting for makeshift roofs, water-purification tablets, and cash for emergency supplies, Inurreta said.
