One time I was flying through the clouds on an airplane. The cloud was so dense that I could barely see the wings from the plane window. I estimated that the cloud droplet concentration must be at least in the tens of thousands per cc. That means that the CCN (Cloud Condensation Nuclei) concentration is also that (each droplet condenses on one CCN).
I took out my portable Geiger counter and counted the ionizing radiation at the height of the plane (say, 30,000 ft). The counter was busy but I could hear the individual counts. Considering that the Geiger window is a fraction of a square cm, it is easy to estimate that the ionizing radiation count is much les than the CCN count (even taking into account the shielding from the plane).
CCN particles are everywhere. Over deserts as dry particles and in clouds as droplets. They are mostly salts from the ocean.
This experience teaches me that the cosmic ray density is nowhere near that of the unbiguitous CCNs.
So, even though the theory is elegant, I was not surprised to hear that follow up measurements failed to correlate cosmic ray intensity with cloud coverage.
The cosmic ray people are bona fide scientists who discovered what could be an elegant solution to the global warming problem.
Had they obtained better correlation I am sure that more scientist would join in. I would, too. So I don't think that there is some prejudice going on, except the typical scramble for funding on all sides.
